Student Support

STUDENT WELLBEING

At the heart of Kristin's values is a belief that the best education does more than simply instil knowledge in the minds of students.
It's about nurturing their mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social wellbeing, so that they can grow and reach their potential. Our School Deans and Wellness Team in collaboration with students, staff and parents play a key role in providing this support in a safe and positive environment. Kristin has two counsellors, a chaplain and an on-site nurse for our students.

ENHANCED LEARNING

In Middle and Senior School Enhanced Learning, our goal is to work with students who find areas of learning a challenge and teach them strategies to overcome these barriers.

This is done in class so the strategies are applied in real-life contexts. We can also screen students to learn more about how they think and where their areas of challenge are. This can lead to Special Assessment Conditions in Senior School for formal assessments and exams without the need for an Educational Psychologist report.

Our support follows students from Year 7 through to Year 13. In Year 7 and 8, we work with the homeroom teachers to support students and identify students who may need more individualised support. In Year 9 onwards, our aim is to have an EL teacher assigned to these students, who will oversee their specialist support, right through until Year 13. All students with learning challenges are different and require different levels of support. We believe in an individualised, holistic approach to helping students in their learning.

INCLUSIVE LEARNING

At Kristin, we have adopted the term Diverse Learning to describe the multiplicity of our gifted and talented learners.

Our core business for Diverse Learners is to ensure their unique learning and social/emotional needs are being met. Students who are gifted in intellectual, sporting, creative and expressive communication, emotional intelligence and critical and creative thinking domains are all catered for. We focus on provision in the classroom via differentiated teaching and learning opportunities. Additionally, we provide bespoke supplementary support and programming to cater to specific student needs.

The Enhanced and Diverse Learning teams work closely to provide for the needs of twice exceptional students. Our first priority in Diverse Learning is to correctly identify gifted students. The process relies upon a range of available data: psychometric testing (where available), past and current teacher feedback, diagnostic learning information and parent, peer and self-nomination.

Parents are encouraged to provide information concerning their child’s diverse learning needs to their child’s teacher, Dean or the Diverse Learning team. These sources are all analysed together by the Diverse Learning team. Students who are identified as requiring Diverse Learning support receive regular mentoring to discuss their individual needs.
