2023 Middle School Production - Disney's Frozen Jr

Frozen fever took over Kristin in Week 2 of Term 3 as our long-awaited Middle School Production of Disney’s Frozen Jr took to the Auditorium stage. As the house lights went out and the show began on opening night, it was a truly momentous occasion as audiences were witness to the opening of the first Middle School Production here at Kristin since 2019 due to the consistent disruptions of the past few years. Not only was this a brand-new production experience for all the Middle School cast and crew, but it was also the most ambitious Middle School Production we had ever attempted and everyone involved certainly rose to the challenge.
With a cast of 79 and a student crew of 99 (comprising the departments of lighting, set, props, hair and make-up, wardrobe, sound, special effects and front of house), magic and professionalism fused throughout each moment of the process. From the first auditions in Term 1, it was clear that this production experience was going to be special. Rehearsals began in Term 2, with cast members learning staging, choreography and of course, the beloved music. The crew joined early in Term 3, and quickly became adept to tricky scenery moves, complex special effects and rapid costume changes (Elsa’s live dress change during 'Let It Go' would be the quickest costume change ever seen on the Kristin stage, and will be talked about for years to come!). Each student contributed wholeheartedly towards this exceptional Middle School Production, with everyone playing a vital role in its success. Congratulations to this talented team of students.
To reach these impressive heights, students worked with remarkable mentors and professionals through the Frozen Jr Production Team, each of whom generously shared their knowledge and expertise. This team of staff, parents and community members embraced the cold and transformed the Auditorium into a Frozen tundra, complete with over 100 snowflakes, over 200 costumes and over 300 technical cues and effects. The dazzling spectacle of this Middle School Production is thanks in no small part to this brilliant group for their generosity, skill, and hard work.
Glowing feedback poured in following the three performances, describing the show as “phenomenal” and “world-class”. A special treat for audience members was a meet and greet experience with some of the show’s lead characters following the matinee performance. The wonder and enchantment in the eyes of the young people lining up to meet Elsa, Anna, and Olaf (many dressed in their own Frozen costumes!) was inspiring, and highlighted the importance of offering these incredible production experiences to our community.
Kristin Productions allow our students to tangibly witness the effect their hard work, focus, dedication, and tenacity have on those around them (the applause of over 1,600 audience members during the 'Let It Go' finale would deafen the sound of any snowstorm), but more importantly, offers them the opportunity to grow in so many ways. To quote Kristin Middle School Principal Kate Pollard: “I genuinely believe that what these students learn is the power of authentic leadership and the infinite possibilities that present themselves when working to create something as a collective. It is something that goes far beyond the production and they are learning some of the most important life lessons.”
I am certain that Disney’s Frozen Jr will warm the hearts of those involved, and those who experienced the unforgettable magic, for many years to come.
