Junior School Curriculum
Kristin Junior School was the first school in New Zealand authorised to teach the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP). The PYP is an international curriculum framework designed for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years, and has been taught in the Junior School since 2002.
Incorporating the New Zealand Curriculum, the PYP focuses on the total growth of the developing child, addressing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic welfare. It offers a comprehensive, inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning and incorporates guidelines on student learning styles, teaching methodologies and assessment strategies.
Classes and Inquiry
All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 study the following subjects:
- Language (English)
- PYP Inquiry: Social Studies, Science, Personal and Social Education
- Arts; Visual Art, Drama, Music, Dance
- Physical Education
In addition to these core subjects, all students learn Mandarin Chinese and Maori. In Year 6 students also have take part in a ‘taster' course of Spanish and French to help them with their subject choices once then enter the Middle School in Year 7.
Students conduct most of their learning in their own classroom, and visit specialist teachers in dedicated learning areas for Chinese, Performing Arts and Physical Education.
A comprehensive summary of the Junior School Programme of Inquiry is available in the Junior School Curriculum Handbook. This outlines the programme by year level and is a fantastic and detailed resource for parents.
The Junior School utilises a variety of assessment tools, including ICAS and PAT external testing.
Currently, selected students from Year 3 to 6 take part in the ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for School) tests for English and Mathematics. The following documents outline the assessment framework for each area. We begin with Introductory in Year 3, then Test A at Year 4, Test B at Year 5 and Test C in Year 6.
