Kristin students to represent New Zealand at European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad

Two Kristin students, Isabelle Ning (Year 12) and Sophie Xu (Year 11), have again been selected to represent New Zealand at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO). Both students are part of the four-strong New Zealand team for the competition, which is to be held in France from April 9-15, 2026.

EGMO is a prestigious European mathematics competition for high school female students who enjoy mathematics beyond the regular school curriculum. Participation is by invitation only, with each country nominating up to four students for their representative team.

Selection for the EGMO team confirms that both students are two of the top four female mathematics students in the country, a remarkable feat. Competing at the EGMO is an honour reserved for only a handful of students, and it will be a fantastic opportunity for them to visit another country and socialise with many young mathematicians from around the world.

This is the second time Isabelle and Sophie have been part of the New Zealand EGMO team, following their participation in the 2025 event in Kosovo. At that event, Sophie received an honourable mention, and Isabelle received a Bronze medal, making her the first New Zealander to medal in this competition.

In another exciting development, both Isabelle and Sophie have been selected for the 15-strong New Zealand training squad for the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad, to be held in Shanghai, China, from July 10-20, 2026. These 15 students from across the country will be whittled down to a final team of six who will travel to China for the competition, which will be announced in April.

Kristin wishes both students the best of luck for the EGMO and the selection process for the International Mathematical Olympiad; the Kristin community is behind you all the way.
