Keio Shonan Fujisawa Junior and Senior High School Exchange

Keio Shonan Fujisawa Junior and Senior High School (Keio SFC) is a coeducational, six-year secondary school located to the south-west of Tokyo city, about an hour and 20 minutes from Shinjuku station. Opened in 1992, Keio SFC is the newest of a family of one elementary school, three junior high schools, five high schools (one in New York) and five university campuses, including the oldest University in Japan on the central Tokyo campus.

The parent school was founded in 1858 by Yukichi Fukuzawa. As Japan's foremost Western Scholar, Fukuzawa championed the ideals of freedom and independence and the art of debate. His portrait features on the Japanese ten thousand yen bank note.

Admission to Keio is highly competitive. About a quarter of the 1200 students in the Junior and Senior high schools are students who have returned to Japan after living abroad. Another unique feature is the fact that 90% of the students will move on to the prestigious Keio University.

The school year begins in early April and runs over three terms until early March, with a summer vacation in July and August. Classes meet Monday through Friday and on Saturday mornings, and after-school club activities will extend the day well beyond the 3.10pm close of 6th period. The partnership between Kristin and Keio SFC was established in 2008 and the exchange occurs on a biennial basis.
