GAIL Conference - Fort Williams
We started the day off with a hearty breakfast and headed off to the fishing town of Uig for a scenic boat ride to spot some cute little puffins and seal pups, accompanied by a couple of porpoises as we sped across the navy waters. Upon our return to land, we retraced the footsteps of the past island dwellers in the Crofting Museum, also paying respects to the inspirational Flora MacDonald, who risked her life to protect Prince Charles Stewart, leader of the Jacobite rebellion.
After saying goodbye to the puffins and seals, we continued our journey south, to Fort Williams by catching the ferry from the majestic Isle of Skye to the small fishing village of Mallaig. Although we were very sad to say goodbye to Portree and the Isle of Skye, exciting adventure awaited us. We explored the colourful town of Mallaig and snacked on fish and chips as we waited to board the Jacobite train, also known as The Hogwarts Express. This was the train used in the Harry Potter films.
Thick steam trailed the scarlet carriage as we entered the world of Harry Potter. “Our childhood fantasies came true” says Darcy. Beautiful Scottish countryside rushed past our sides as we indulged in chocolate frogs and sweets. Exhausted but happy as we sank into the comfort of our van, we ended the busy day with pizza and music at the Glen Nevis youth hostel near Fort Williams.
