Inquiry is the Key

Kristin Kindergarten is a dynamic and vibrant environment where young learners can explore and investigate while gaining the basic skills necessary for their next big step into primary school. Supported by skilled, experienced and engaging staff, our students develop independence, self-confidence and responsibility for their learning through the IB PYP programme of inquiry.

Inquiry-based learning is at the heart of the PYP and is a vehicle for ensuring that from a very young age, our students are developing skills that will play a key role in their life-long learning. Delivered alongside the New Zealand Early Childhood Education Curriculum, Te Whariki, the PYP provides an educational philosophy and methodology that complements the content of the New Zealand Curriculum.

The PYP presents students with six transdisciplinary themes designed to encourage exploration, investigation and reflection in a way that allows each individual to engage with their own areas of interest. This is particularly important for children in the Kindergarten and Junior School as they are constructing their own meaning and understanding of themselves and their environment.

An example of how this applies in the Kindergarten is within the theme of ‘How we express ourselves'. The Kindergarten students explore the idea that ‘Nursery Rhymes inform and provoke us, they give us pleasure and help our imaginations grow.' With teacher support and modelling to introduce the inquiry, and regular trips to the Library, the children will tap into their own experiences with nursery rhymes and discover why we have nursery rhymes, identify their favourites, retell them and then act them out for an audience. The students are equipped with digital and multimedia resources that foster their independence and encourage their love of learning, and delight in sharing their learning with their peers and at home.

Through this programme of inquiry, students in the Kindergarten learn to be active learners and enquirers, gaining the necessary basic skills so they are intellectually, socially and emotionally prepared to enter the Junior School and achieve success throughout their school years.
