Roots and Shoots

Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots is a global youth led community action program, comprised of thousands of young people helping make the world a better place. It covers over 130 countries and has been affecting poeples lives since 1991. Be part of a greater cause by considering joining Kristin's Roots and Shoots group.

Kristin's very own Roots and Shoots aims to continue the great work done by others on a local scale. In the past, Kristin students have done such projects ranging from tree planting and habitat conservation to helping with the Auckland City Mission with those less fortunate and organising fundraisers to help others in need.

At Kristin, we offer these groups within Roots and Shoots, if you're interested in getting involved with any of these, don't hesitate to email Sarah Wakeford.

Wilson Home

This facility supports children with a disability. You are able to volunteer and undertake supervised work with the children and their families. This is very rewarding experience for people who have a high level of empathy, who are creative and patient and enjoy helping others.

Tree Planting & Habitat Restoration

If you're not a foreigner to some hard outdoor work, participating in this group should be for you. Previous groups have participated in Department of Conservation and other community groups planting and restoration days.

Vegetable Garden

If you want to learn how to grow your own food, consider helping out in the Vegetable Garden. The aim is to produce enough to donate good quality produce to North Shore Food Banks.

Although you cannot volunteer for SPCA until you are 18, you can run events to increase the awareness of the important work they do, organise fundraisers, plus collect and/or make useful items to help benefit the lives of these animals.

RDA are always looking for volunteers to assist with the health and well-being of the horses and the children who enjoy riding them. Volunteers can be involved in a number of activities, according to their interest and expertise.

Auckland City Mission

The ACM's team provide vital services to people living in need and are always in need of help. You can volunteer behind the scenes and organise fundraisers and food drives to assist those less fortunate than ourselves.

Sustainable Coastlines & Waterways

New Zealand has great coastlines and these need to be kept this way. In this group, you will be doing things like planning, organising and carring out coastal clean ups with assistance from Sustainable Coastlines to help maintain our beautiful coasts.

The aim is to make Kristin a more environmentally aware school. This covers a broad range of areas within the school including, the use of FairTrade products, reducing the use of products that contain palm oil, investigating the feasibility of renewable energy sources.

Special Olympics NZ

This organisation provides the opportunity for young people with an intellectual disability to participate in sport. Everyone involved, from the athletes to the volunteers, makes new friends and has lot of fun as they undertake the challenge of playing team and individual sports.

Red Cross

"Our mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilising the power of humanity and enhancing community resilience."

You can volunteer in their retail shops, collect useful items for the refugee families the Red Cross support or even knit blankets to donate - there are lots of opportunities to help out.
