Football Boys’ 1st XI secure promotion in a thriller
Our Boys’ 1st XI Football team have been promoted up a grade after an exhilarating promotion match victory over Kingsway School.
The first leg of the two-leg tie was played away at Kingsway, and it turned into a goal-fest, with the final score 4-4. This set the scene for an epic encounter the following week on home turf.
After a messy first 20 minutes, Kingsway found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead (5-4 on aggregate), which they carried into the halftime break. Kristin produced plenty of chances in the first half but couldn’t quite capitalise, leaving it all to do in the second half.
The chances kept coming early in the second half, where the Kristin team had a good strong hold on the match and were finally rewarded with a penalty, which was cooly taken from the spot to tie the game.
As time began to run down, and against the run of play, Kingsway scored a sensational goal from outside the box to retake the lead and put themselves in the box seat for promotion. Shirts were off, and the celebrations were large, but the match wasn’t over yet.
Kristin continued to battle and search for an equaliser, buoyed by the hundreds of supporters in attendance cheering loudly. The clock kept ticking into added time, with the full-time whistle sure to be blown at any moment. That is when the magic happened. Kristin surged down the right and crossed the ball across the box. The ball missed everyone except Noah Geshiura-Hulme (Year 10), who was lurking on the left edge of the box and connected a spectacular volley that bounced past the keeper to find the back of the net (watch the goal here). Cue fantastic scenes from the supporters who were sent into raptures. Phew, the match was now tied 2-2 (6-6) on aggregate, and seconds after the restart, the full-time whistle was blown, sending the match to two ten-minute halves of extra time.
Kristin then didn’t look back, scoring a great goal in the first half of extra time and dominating the rest of the proceedings to claim victory 3-2 on the day and 7-6 on aggregate. Promotion secured for the 2025 season!
Well done to the team for their incredible never-say-die attitude and to the fantastic supporters who helped them get over the line. We look forward to seeing what more magic this team can produce this year and wish them all the best in their quest for back-to-back promotions.
