Middle School Curriculum

Inquiry Based Learning and the IB

Engagement and challenge are at the heart of learning in the Middle School. Our IB Middle Years Programme is inquiry based, meaning that every unit of work begins with a question. For example, "Is Language Power?" With this approach, students immediately understand the relevance of what they are learning and find it more engaging.

Teaching must be precise and rigorous. Students are taught the rules of spelling and grammar, the strategies for solving algebraic equations, and then given the opportunity to apply this knowledge. Providing an opportunity for students to demonstrate and test their understanding is essential. In applying learning, our students enjoy the immense satisfaction of having the disparate parts fall into place as a cohesive whole. This understanding allows them to confidently relate new learning to their everyday lives.

Students in Year 7 and 8 follow a set programme in which they spend half of each day in the familiar Homeroom situation with their own teacher who covers several subjects. The rest of the day is spent with specialist tutors in subjects such as sciences, arts or sports. In Years 9 and 10, the programmes become more specialised and the students are offered choices as Option Subjects. All students learn a second language and utilise personal laptops or tablets in their daily classroom activities.

Our learning programmes are diverse and engaging, with particular emphasis on developing genuine understanding and mastery. The sense of achievement that our students gain from these programmes provides a strong academic foundation as they move forward into their senior schooling years, confident in their own abilities and equipped with a passion for learning.
