Changing the State of Matter in Year 1
“Why do people change the state of matter?” the 1C students asked during their inquiry into the central idea, ‘Heat energy affects the state of matter.’ While they had experienced turning water into ice to cool down their drinks, making ice blocks to enjoy on hot days, and tubing on man-made snow at Snowplanet, most of the students had never experienced a hangi before. Mr Mataio offered to bring in his hangi drum so that the Year 1 students could see how people use gas to change the state of matter from water to steam, then use this steam to cook their food. After the students worked hard to peel the kumara, potato and pumpkin, they watched as Mr Mataio prepared the hangi early in the morning. Once all of the food was in the drum and the fire was started, they enjoyed smelling the food as it cooked during the day. When they were finally allowed to eat the vegetables, the students gobbled them up quickly, surprised at how delicious they tasted. The Year 1 students would like to say thanks to Mr Mataio for helping us to experience a hangi, and to help us learn that people change the state of matter to make their food taste awesome!
