Year 5 Coast to Coast walk

On Monday Year 5 completed the Auckland Coast to Coast Walk.

What a great day it was! It was the second time that we had tried to complete this walk and this time the weather nearly behaved itself, not too hot, not too cold, and only one shower to keep us on our toes. We were joined by lots of parents and, with their help, we negotiated the busy roads and streets of Auckland. We started at Onehunga Lagoon, made our way through Royal Oak to Cornwall Park, Melville Park and the Domain, then down into town, to Britomart and then the ferry terminal to catch our buses.

Mr Hutton shared lots of interesting history facts with us as the walk progressed. We learned about early leaders of our city and how they contributed to some of the parks and sports grounds we enjoy today. We noticed the architecture of the houses in the older parts of Auckland and learnt about the Maori pa sites we passed. Back in town we noticed the facades of some of the buildings were the original facades from the early days of the city. We particularly enjoyed our walk through Cornwall Park where we were careful to avoid sheep droppings and we witnessed one escaped young sheep doing his best to find his way back to the right side of the fence!

The day ended with a lovely surprise! After walking for nearly 8 hours, one of our lovely Year 5 families treated us to an ice-cream or a slushie at McDonalds! What a cool way to end a cool day! A big thanks to this family and to all the parents who made the trip a very special day.
