Philosophers in the Junior School

Children are natural philosophers. Ask anyone who is a parent and have encountered their young child constantly asking the question “Why?” Yet how often do we encourage the questions children ask and really take the time to further develop the ensuing discussion?
In the Junior School a group of children have been selected to take part in Philosophy classes each week from Year 1-5. (Year 6 will be selected in Term 4, after Exhibition) with Mrs Ashley.
It has been wonderful to see our Kristin children's young minds querying and demanding justification for accepted norms as they search for meaning. This quest is encouraged and channelled in a constructive direction during our classes.
In addition to asking questions about our world, the philosophy class has been recording their ideas and thoughts using David Hyerle's Thinking Maps.
David Hyerle is the author and creator of a thought organisation methodology called "Thinking Maps. There are 8 maps the children will learn to use and these are designed to support different types of thinking.
