Growing more than minds
Year 2 have been looking at the importance of plants with the Central idea of ‘All living things need plants to survive’. On 2 November we set off to explore the Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manurewa. The day was organised into two parts: time to explore and then an opportunity to spend time in the potting shed and tend a small vegetable garden. The weather was warm and sunny and the lakes were filled with birdlife. From edible gardens, rare natives, enormous trees and roses in full bloom, the children were treated to an amazing variety of plant life in the Spring. In the classroom we learned about the life cycle of a bean and had the chance to look at worms up close. Everyone carefully planted a seed in a pot that we have brought back to school. The children can’t wait to watch them grow so that they can start their own gardens at home.
