North Island Primary And Intermediate Schools Ski Champs
Over the past two weeks of this term the North Island Primary and Intermediate School Ski Champs have been held. Kristin fielded teams in each event with some promising results. It was great to see the Junior school teams fielding athletes as young as Year 1 & 2. This bodes well for the continued future of the sport.
Once again weather was a major factor as always at Mt Ruapehu. The first of the two weeks the Year 7 and 8 students were competing. Unfortunately, the weather played a major role in the competition where we only got one day of competition completed due to adverse weather conditions. That day was, however, a fantastic bluebird day on the hill with fantastic snow conditions for the students. There were huge fields in both the girls (156) and boys (244) Giant Slalom with over 90 teams entered. The standout result was Chyna Bentley placing 22nd as a Yr 7. The team finished a creditable 32nd out of the 98 teams entered.
The following week saw the year 1 to 6 primary school students competing. Here, students were divided into different age groups Year 5 and 6 boys and girls, Year 1 to 4 boys and girls. The weather was much kinder where we saw two days of competition before it once again closed out. This meant that the competition could be completed and saw some great results from our young teams. The standout results in the Giant Slalom were; Stephen Sun 18th out of 156 Year 5/6 boys, in the Year 1-4 Boys (95) Jack Bentley 11th, Roy Luo 13th and Daniel Wang 18th. The Team finished a fantastic 14th place from the 124 teams entered. Credit must also go to Melissa Sun and Alexander Sadler competing for the very first time as Year 1 students. With this young group coming through the future looks strong!
It was great to see a range of our students on the slopes once more. All did the very best to compete and represented the school with pride.
