Camp Bentzon Year 5

On Monday last week, year 5 set off to Camp Bentzon on Kawau Island of the week. What an awesome time we had!

After arriving around midday, we set off on a hike up killer hill to a beautiful beach, where we swam and played in the sand. On our return, the tide had come in, blocking our path. We were transported back to camp by boat – thanks to Charles Maud and Maurice Bryham.

Fitness and wharf jumping is a great way to start each day! On Tuesday and Wednesday students completed eight activities, run by camp hosts, Peter and Erin and our fabulous parent volunteers. The students kayaked, sailed, swam, went fishing, built rafts and bivouacs, abseiled and did the confidence course. The sun shone and children challenged themselves to push through their barriers.

On Thursday, we caught the ferry to School House Bay. We then began a tour that took us through the main sights and history of Kawau, thanks to our very own tour guide, Mr Hutton. We saw, the old school house, learnt about the first Pakeha inhabitants, went to the Cooper Mine and saw the grand Mansion House.

By Friday, we were all feeling very tired but happy. After packing our bags and cleaning up, Peter and Erin took the student for a team challenge. Each member of the team had to complete a different challenge such as answering general knowledge questions, knocking over a target with a ball, swimming and kayaking among others. It was a fun way to end a fabulous week in paradise.

Year 5 teachers would like to say well done to our students. You were an enthusiastic and cooperative group to take on camp and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with you. Also a HUGE thank you to the parents who gave up their time to come and help us. Parents worked so hard and their positivity and support was incredible! We could not have done this without you.
