Hamish Mouat in 'Joseph' – 2010

"Obviously, my fondest memories of my time as a student at Kristin was my heavy involvement with the Major Musical Productions each year.

The nerves of auditions, the anticipation of the cast list, the joy of the first day of rehearsals, the elation of Opening Night and the emotion of each production finally closing after months of hard work. Working with a team of passionate staff members who inspired and instilled professionalism in all that we did helped us achieve the very best, not only in our performances onstage, but also with our processes offstage.

I got the chance to play some incredible roles - starting as the Major General in the Pirates of Penzance in Year 9, through to Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar in Year 13 – a role that still sticks as one of my biggest theatrical challenges, even ten years later.

The biggest highlight was probably playing Joseph in 2010 and wearing the magnificent technicolor dreamcoat, designed and hand-painted by Maureen van Dam (Mrs Verster's Mum). It was a real honour in my role now as Artistic Director at Kristin, to direct this show in 2020, and watch the next generation of performers take to the stage as my friends and I did a decade earlier, and see our 2020 Joseph Tim Gunn don the beautiful coat was very special. A truly full circle moment!"

What’s your first memory of Kristin?
I remember when I started at Kristin, it was the 'country school'. There were chickens that roamed the campus and the school neighbours were strawberry fields. You couldn't walk to school, the old Hanhams buses would bring us in. I remember our driver stopping at the dairy on the way home and getting us lollies wasn't uncommon!

What are your favourite memories of your time at Kristin?
I loved my time at Kristin, but probably the most memorable was the 'Spice Girls' act that just went on and on and on. It started off as a talent quest item, but then we performed at assemblies and any other opportunity!

The school productions were always amazing. Lacking any kind of musical talent found me backstage on the 'make-up' crew. It was such an awesome way to get to know people all throughout the school.

Who were some of your most memorable teachers?
Mr Parratt - Procrastination is the thief of time!
Mr Ryan
Ms Casey
Mrs Noyes
Mr Buckley
Mr Burge
Mrs Pulsford
Mrs Dwyer
Mr Berry
Rev Clarke

Connections, Kristin is all about connections that are developed from opportunities.

During my time as a student at Kristin, there were endless opportunities on offer, allowing me to….
Connect with students, creating lifelong friendships.
Connect with teachers, to be inspired.
Connect with others, forming global connections.

One of the most significant connections I made was with Emma when I was selected in 2007 to be part of the Melbourne Exchange to Carey Baptist Grammar School. A six-week exchange to host Emma at Kristin and in turn, I spent six weeks in Melbourne with Emma and her family.

Starting my journey at Kristin in 1997, I now had the opportunity to experience a different school, another country and the range of opportunities this would offer. It was an incredible experience and another lifelong friendship was made.

Now as a staff member at Kristin, I am privileged to be able to provide global connections for our students as the Dovetail Exchange Coordinator. We have over 10 Dovetail partner schools around the world and at the start of 2020 more than 25 students were hosted by Kristin families.

These opportunities offer so much more than just an experience, the connections we make with others allow us to challenge ourselves and gain an understanding of others’ perspectives.
