International Committee 2010
Jamie Slack, Jordan Burkinshaw and Cathy Zhang and their group have worked hard to welcome and support 14 new overseas students in Term 1 - from a number of different cournties; Germany, Brazil, America, Swiss, Italy China and Korea.
Committee members have been busy helping the new students with the course confirmation in week 0, finding buddies who helped them settle in and planning a welcome BBQ.

International Students 2009
Whenever a student chooses to study overseas for long or short periods both risks and rewards are inherent factors of this experience. According to our current group of international students it is the rewards that have been paramount. The wider Kristin community has also been rewarded by their presence.
“ I kept getting lost but I will always remember the way in which students looked after me in the difficult first few weeks . Now I feel 'reborn' as every new experience has given me a chance of reevaluating different cultures” - Sylvia Zhang, 2009 leaver from Haimen City, China plans to attend University in either NZ or the UZ but will volunteer in South Africa as gap experience.
The first few days are crucial to ensuring students are set on the right path towards making the most of
their new school and city. In many cases the first challenge is in fact the practical dilemma of getting from A to B, as to a foreign student the size of our campus can seem daunting. It is at this point that the student leaders on the 2009 International Student Committee kicked off their responsibilities by coordinating orientation buddies and guiding these newcomers from classroom to library to Pavilion Cafe!

This year the committee was inspirationally led by Chris Ruscoe as Prefect Chair, and wonderfully supported by Jane Sung as Deputy and Nick Just as Secretary, not to mention the enthusiasm and ideas from the rest of their team. Overall they were responsible for ongoing practial and social support through welcome functions for Rena and Yuki from Japan; Jenna, Lilian, Maria, Nick and Marlene from Germany, Jacob from Austria, Bruno and Mariana from Brazil. For these stduetns arriving in February the committee held a day out in Takapuna, where their visitors experience the classic 'Fish 'n' Chips on the beach' after enjoying an exciting game of Laser Force. All too quickly, these students, except for Yuki and Rena, had gone and the committee was welcoming Moritz , Usha , Charlotte, Christian, Magdalena, Marcel and then Marc !

Additional committees such as the Korean Students Committee, led by Jerry Jeung, and the Chinese Students Committee led by Cathy Zhuang also had a productive year. These committees are invaluable in terms of providing culturally attuned peer support and marking their national celebrations. As are the Parent Committees such as the Korean, Chinese and Japanese committees who have met on a regular basis through the year.
We welcomed Raewyn Kane as Homestay Coordinator this year and Raewyn has placed the majority (65%) of international students with local kiwi families. A positive homestay colours the whole experience for international students, and we are extremely appreciative of the time and care homestay families have offered our students on a daily basis.
