Week 8 Term 2

How do we read the Bible?
The parable of the pearl

Matthew 13: 45 and 46

“Lord we ask that you open our minds to understand this parable, discover afresh the depth of your love and the significance of our own lives. Amen”

Reading these two verses we see a story of a merchant searching for pearls of great value. Pearls were so prized in the day, that if a merchant found an exceptionally beautiful pearl he/she could possibly sell everything they had buy that one.

What does this mean? Well, it says that the “Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant”. This merchant is seeking beautiful things. In the Kingdom of Heaven, I believe that God is that merchant and God is constantly seeking. What is God seeking? People! Us, created in his imaged and loved before the foundation of the world. you are a pearl of great value and God is prepared to give everything for you – and he did, he gave his very life so that you could be His. This reminds me of the story of the lost sheep where the shepherd (God) is prepared to leave the 99 to seek out the lost one. Luke 15: 1 – 7. Read this passage as well and see the joy that God experiences when the one is found. Just like the merchant's joy when a pearl of great value is found.

Think for a few minutes.....What does this mean to you? How do you feel about being a pearls of great value? Do you think you are?
How do you feel about the concept that God is prepared to give everything, even his life, to be in a relationship with you?

Respond to God in your own way, in prayer, as you close.

God bless
