What we've been up to

New Parents Dinner - March 2012

New Parents DinnerThis week we welcomed over 300 new parents to Kristin at our annual New Parents Dinners in the LIC foyer.

Over two enjoyable nights those new to Kristin mingled with Department Heads and Kristin staff, and a few longer serving parents too. Peter Clague opened the evening and School Principals Judi Paape, Adam Heath and Brendan Kelly also addressed the guests. They were joined by KFF Chairman, Priscilla Collins.

It was a great way to welcome the many new parents to Kristin and we hope you all had an enjoyable evening.

Cooking Demonstrations - November & December 2011

Cooking DemosRebecca McCarthy's fantastically popular cooking demonstrations ended this week with the grand finale – Cobb BBQ 101. The demonstration was another sell-out, not surprisingly given the delicious aromas and tasty treats that were escaping from the LIC Foyer. Special thanks to Rebecca and Chevonne who have given fantastic demonstrations over the last 5 weeks. We have enjoyed every single one of them!

Alumni Reunion - November 2011

Alumni ReunionMore than 60 Kristin Alumni were reunited with familiar faces when they returned to their old stomping ground at the recent Kristin Reunion. Alumni from 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006 reconnected with friends as they enjoyed a glass of wine in the LIC foyer on Wednesday 2 November. Executive Principal, Peter Clague, welcomed the returning students before the 2011- 12 Events and Hosting Committee escorted the guests on a tour of the school grounds, accompanied by Senior School Principal, Brendan Kelly. The atmosphere was jovial as each year level posed for group photos with friends and enjoyed a laugh, reminiscing on old times. We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who attended. We welcome the opportunity to share with you your experiences of Kristin and as always it was hugely enjoyable to hear where life has taken you since your time at the school.

Champagne High Tea - September 2011

Ladies Champagne Breakfast - March 2011

On a glorious Autumn morning in late March, 180 of our Kristin 'ladies' (mothers and staff) gathered at The Wharf on Northcote Point for the biannual Ladies Champagne Breakfast. This event is put together by Pamela Peryman Director of School Relations, and her team of dedicated volunteers from the Kristin Family and Friends as well as Year 13 students.

The ladies gathered at the venue and began their morning with a glass of bubbles before moving to their tables for a delicious breakfast.

The highlight of the morning was guest speaker, Peta Mathias. The prolific New Zealand chef, author and broadcaster, delighted the audience with personal tales of her childhood, humorous anecdotes and philosophical advice. Peta also allowed guests a sneak peek into her new book which is yet to launch, and focuses on the innate ability of women to transform themselves – observations written and portrayed in her distinctive style of course. It was certainly a 'ladies only' and very entertaining event!

The chance to dress up in heels and sip bubbles was a sell-out, as always, and proceeds will be going towards improving sporting facilities at Kristin School.

Graduation Dinner - November 2010

Graduation Dinner

Held in November each year, this is the function at which we farewell our Year 13 Graduates.  Parents and families join us at a formal dinner where speeches and presentations take place before our students make the transition from graduates to alumni.

In recognition of the commitment by students and their families, a special presentation is made to students who have attended Kristin from Kindergarten to Year 13.

Father/Son Breakfast - October 2010

Father/Son Breakfast

Speaking of success – All Whites Coach Ricki Herbert had hardly touched down after his return from the FIFA World Championships when he visited Kristin.

The guests couldn't help but be impressed with Ricki's modest manner and his fabulous World Cup stories completed the morning. This event was the fourth in a series.  Previous guest speakers include Mark Inglis, Rob Hewitt and Mils Muliaina.

Alumni Reunion - October 2010

Celebrating the progress and success of our past pupils is an important part of the Kristin culture.  We love to welcome our past pupils back to our Reunions which are held in October each year.  A few drinks with staff and a welcome by the Principal followed by a tour of the school is what this evening is about.  Relaxed and informal it's a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, keep us informed and of course see how much we've changed.

Family Picnic - March 2012

Family Picnic

The rain held off just long enough for hundreds of Kristin families and friends to enjoy a fun evening together at the Family Picnic last Friday.

The giant inflatable obstacle course was a favourite, as were the virtical bungee and pony rides. Our Chinese Parents group was serving up delicious dumplings and rice dishes and the smells from all of the food caravans were divine. Thanks to your fantastic support of this annual event, the KFF were able to raise $550 to go towards a new friendship chair for the Junior School. A big thanks to everyone who came along or supported the event - especially all of the parents who provided delicious baking for the hugely popular cake stall!

Kristin Giftstore - November & December 2011

Giftstore ShoppingIt has been a full and festive six weeks with all of the activities surrounding the Kristin Giftstore. We have enjoyed seeing so many faces from the Kristin community pass through the shop, and we know that your Christmas stockings will be jam packed full of wonderful treats if the activity at our Outlet Sale is anything to go by! As with our recent cookbook, the Kristin Giftstore could not function without the help and support of parents and the KFF committee. These wonderful women have generously donated their time and skills to cook, preserve, assemble, price, wrap, sell and generally run this store – a project which has been months in the planning. I would like to offer my absolute thanks. Without these ladies the Giftstore would not have been such a resounding success.

The Kristin Giftstore is now closed, but the proceeds from the store and related activities have made a wonderful contribution to Stage Two of the Building Greatness Appeal for new sporting facilities at Kristin. Thank you again to everyone for their fantastic support.

Father Son Breakfast with Wayne Shelford - September 2011

Wayne ShelfordAt 7am on the 6 September, Kristin fathers and sons packed into the Dove theatre. We were there to listen to Wayne 'Buck' Shelford, the toughest number 8 to ever play rugby and a legend of the game.

After filling up with a delicious breakfast, we listened as Buck spoke of his career and how New Zealand rugby has changed over the years. We laughed as he told some great stories about his life, from his time in the navy to when he fought the New Zealand Heavyweight Boxing Champion.

He spoke of how he worked his way up from the 'new kid' on the team - errand runner and general dogs-body - eventually establishing himself as a key senior player. He then reminisced on the timing of his career which meant he missed out on the transition from amateur to professional rugby in New Zealand.

After his presentation, we all had the opportunity to get to know him better as he fielded questions from the audience. Questions ranged from his thoughts on the early retirement of today's players, to his starting line-up for the World Cup.

We all left the Dove in high spirits that morning. Buck is a family man with a great sense of humour who commands the attention of his audience. Listening to him was an inspiration.

Mother Daughter Breakfast with Anna Scarlett - August 2011

Anna ScarlettOn a decidedly chilly morning on Thursday 18 August the Auditorium foyer was a hive of activity as the Mother Daughter Breakfast got under way. The delicious and nutritious breakfast was washed down with a much needed cuppa before the 95 ladies took their seats in the Dove for the main attraction: a presentation from New Zealand sporting icon, Anna Scarlett.

In a relaxed and enjoyable talk, Anna explained how her passion for sports led her to represent New Zealand in both Netball and Beach Volleyball.

She talked to the girls about the importance of setting goals and aiming high. She emphasised the need for a healthy balance between sport, family and study, and through stories of her own challenges and achievements, Anna demonstrated the vital link between passion, confidence and success.

After an enjoyable barrage of questions, four mother/daughter teams were selected to take part in a shoot-off against Anna. Two shooters were up at once against the 1.87m tall defender with 30 seconds to get as many goals as they could. A good laugh was had by all, and well done to Year 6 student Sophie Katavich who got the final shot in a one-on-one sudden death shoot out.

2011 Family Picnic

Family Picnic - March 2011

The annual family picnic was held on 4 March. The "Canterbury" theme from the Mufti Day carried on through to the family picnic with donations going to the Earthquake Appeal.  The rain held off until 7.00pm, allowing children to enjoy the many activities available including: hot rods, vertical bungy, ferris wheel, fly wall, obstacle course and of course the Middle School Spooky House.

Mother/Daughter Breakfast

Mother/Daughter Breakfast - September 2010

Journalist and Television personality Carol Hirschfeld needed no introduction as she stepped onto the stage – the audience thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to gain some inside knowledge on the life of one of our local celebrities.

This event was the third in a series.  Previous guest speakers include Lorraine Downes and Sara Tetro.

The Glitter Ball - August 2010

The Glitter Ball

A record 340 guests attended this fabulous event held at the Hyatt Hotel.  Speaking of records, funds raised from a live auction, silent auction and tombola raffle topped $100,000 making this one of our top fundraising events. MC Frankie Stevens and Auctioneer Wayne Maguire from Premium Real Estate  did a magnificent job throughout the evening and our thanks also to the parents, friends and local businesses who supported this event with their generous donations of products and services.  In particular Giltrap Prestige for their donation of a new VW Golf, Rt Hon John Key's Office, VOMO Island, HRV Home Ventilation Systems, Mark Olsen, Lakeshore Springs Resort and Pacific Resort, Aitutaki along with the Lambourne Family for their donation of accommodation at the Fiji Hilton Apartments.
