Senior schooling at Kristin is viewed as being one three-year course rather than three one-year courses. Although new options are available each year, most have prerequisites and build on prior knowledge. To ensure that Seniors are well-equipped to take the courses they wish, we invest heavily in course counselling along with regular review and advice. Central to this are the Deans at each year level, the Assistant Principal responsible for IB, the Deputy Principal responsible for NCEA, and the Director of Career Services.
Advice and guidelines to assist families of Senior students with course selection for the following year is offered at a Senior School Options evening in July. Details of the format of this evening is mailed to families at the end of Term 2. Parent Teacher Interviews early in Term 3 also provide the opportunity to discuss the next year's courses, particularly with subject teachers. In addition, all Seniors students for the following year are interviewed individually during Term 3 to discuss their progress to date and future pathways. Further options counselling takes place by appointment later in the year.
The curriculum must be regarded as all activities that the school offers. Some of the aspects of the curriculum, outside of the academic, are below.
The opportunity to learn and practise leadership skills is one of the most important aspects of the Senior School. The school operates on the belief that leadership is service and encourages all students to accept the challenge to lead. Students who wish to assume a leadership role at Kristin understand that in doing so they are committing themselves to working for other people. Opportunities for leadership in the Senior School include: Prefects, Senior Committees, coaching and peer tutoring, the Kristin Fashion Show and the leadership of other scheduled school events. To visit the Prefect page, click here.
A number of class or group trips are also offered to students throughout the year. These may be curriculum related, or for a particular year group, or for students interested in performing international community service etc. Visit the International pages for more information about partner school opportunities or click on the experiences we list below, to view more information.
All Senior students attend camps for up to one week each year. Camps develop social skills, provide a range of challenges and problem solving activities which cannot be offered in the formal curriculum and help students develop self-reliance. Outdoor Experience Week is an integral part of the Senior School programme. Each year level camp is themed to ensure students develop a progression of skills as they move through the school. Academic Support
Kristin has established a reputation for academic excellence. We offer a vibrant, innovative, yet rigorous education. Highly qualified, motivated staff, with specialist teachers for curriculum areas, are committed to providing an environment in which our students can excel.
Kristin emphasises the total formation of each student as an individual with unique gifts and talents. Academic support in the form of the Library Information Centre, programmes for gifted and talented students, and those needing learner support, is available.
Established in 2008, K-Force are a rapidly growing robotics team who compete in the NZ VEX Robotics Competition. They also recently incorporated FIRST LEGO League into their Robotics Programme for Year 7s and 8s. The team has, as its core values, excellence and gracious professionalism to help build a strong competitive team.
The effort these students have been putting in over the last few years is now bearing fruit as they are regularly placed among the top ranking teams at monthly scrimmages including one overall win and one excellence award: recently they won the Programming Challenge at the North Island Regionals, qualifying for the World Championship 22-26 April in Dallas, Texas, USA.
