More Duke of Edinburgh Achievements
On Friday 23 July, 15 students embarked on another Silver Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey. Their tramp began at Bethell's Beach in overcast conditions. This soon turned to rain as they walked around the perimeter of Lake Wainamu, up the steep Houghton Track to Smythe Ridge Track and then Smythe Corner. The going was tough and very muddy and they were all very glad to get to the hut by 4:30pm after almost eight hours of walking.
The next day they walked to Piha Beach. The return journey took them past the lovely Kitekite Falls before the steep climb back to the hut. The weather was great but the tracks were muddy and slippery. Everyone arrived back safely but with sore legs and a few blisters.
Day three was a gently walk to Waitakere Dam and a great sense of achievement on the bus ride home.
