Middle School Leadership

Leadership is an important part of Middle School student life at Kristin. There are many and varied leadership opportunities available to all students through the Middle School. These include:

Class Captains
Sports Captains
Tour Guide Leaders
Flagpole Assistants
House Captains
Environment Leaders
Junior School Assistants

Middle School Council

This team consists of Class Captains from each Year level as well as the Student Council at Year 10. They meet as a team twice a term to look at all aspects of Middle School student life. Many initiatives from this group have been implemented and help towards the continued improvement of the Middle School.

These opportunities provide a good platform leading into the Year 10 Leadership Programme.

Year 10 Leadership Programme

Leadership is an essential and integral part of the Year 10 Programme. All Year 10 students are given the opportunity to join one of the fifteen leadership teams that are available.

The students in these teams are responsible for organising many Middle School events, activities and programmes including; assemblies, rock bands, fundraising activities, sports events, recycling initiatives, the Middle School Magazine, lunchtime programmes, community and service initiatives, technical support, Reading Day and Mother and Daughter Breakfast, to name just a few.

Aims of the programme:

To provide students with a wide range of activities beyond the classroom
To foster student responsibility
To build and develop relationships with both the Junior and Senior School as well as agencies in the wider community
To encourage student participation in decision making
To allow students to deal with and have ownership of 'here and now' matters
To develop students interpersonal skills as they work in teams to achieve definite outcomes.

Programme successes:

Students have a sense of pride and belonging
Develop high self esteem and self confidence in students through achieving success
Wherever possible, students who demonstrate leadership potential but in a negative way, are directed to a leadership team
Students build a strong bond and relationship with the staff facilitator attached to the team
Teachers have reported a number of students who are part of this programme making major changes in their behaviour and school work. This is simply from belonging to a leadership team where they create positive outcomes for themselves
Feedback from students suggest that the Leadership Programme is one of the highlights of their time in the Middle School.
