International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a programme of international education designed to help students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world. It is designed for students aged 11 to 16 and is offered in hundreds of schools worldwide.

The programme specifically focuses on how to learn and how to evaluate information critically, skills considered just as important as learning facts.

Normally the MYP would be a five year programme with students completing the certificate in Year 11. At Kristin students take part in a four year programme, a special allowance that has been made by the IBO as Kristin students here complete Middle School in Year 10 and begin NCEA in Year 11.

MYP Criteria and Assessment

Each MYP subject has a unique set of criteria that are used to assess student learning. Students will undertake many forms of assessment tasks over the year including; assignments, investigations, group activities, tests, examinations (Year 9 and 10), essays, presentations, explanations and reviews. A grid showing all of the MYP criteria and the maximum points awarded to them can be found here.
All work is assessed by the teacher and the self-assessed by the students themselves. Students will also be given the opportunity to peer assess other students work and offer constructive criticism and further feedback to improve learning.

Personal Project

At the culmination of the MYP, students are expected to complete a Personal Project. This is a major piece of work in a subject of their choice under the guidance of a supervising teacher. This is a rewarding opportunity for students to undertake a project which inspires them, demonstrates their abilities as good learners and is a truly creative product of their own initiative. The common theme is that the project has intrinsic worth which will benefit the student and or others. An information evening is held in Term 4 for Year 9 students, regarding the concept. For more information on MYP, see the Middle School handbook.
