Amalia Fawcett Alumni 1995

Former Kristin student Amalia Fawcett graduated in 1995 and moved to Switzerland with her family for four years where she completed her BA in International Relations, cum laude. In 2000 Amalia commenced her MA in African Studies at Yale University and visited Rwanda to research national identity issues for young genocide survivors. This experience confirmed she wanted to concentrate on youth and refugee issues and she went on to then gain her MSc in Refugee Studies at the University of Oxford in the UK. After living and working in Tanzania, Amalia returned to Switzerland to work for a UN-affiliated agency. Finally, after eight years overseas, Amalia returned to New Zealand to work for World Vision as an Advocacy and Policy Analyst and focuses on child protection and issues pertaining to HIV and AIDS. With this work she has travelled to Pakistan following the 2005 earthquake to look at child protection systems and has been seconded to World Vision East Timor in 2006 to assist the national staff in their child protection work after the May riots. This year she hopes to return to Africa, with World Vision, to research issues children face due to HIV and AIDS. Her passion for World Vision’s work against injustice started with the 40 Hour Famine at school and just keeps growing! Amalia returned to Kristin this term to speak to Senior and Middle school students about the famine.
