Triple Gold Success
Three Kristin students were presented their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards by the Governor General, The Honourable Sir Anand Satyanand recently. They were Senior School students Andrew Ramsay, Hannah Sycamore and Richard Haworth.
The aim of the Duke of Edinburgh Award is to get young people participating in an exciting, flexible and individually tailored programme to build skills, identity and self-esteem. It not only introduces them to positive, challenging and enjoyable things to do in their free time, it also fosters friendships with peers, teachers and other adults who give up their time to share skills and help organise the programme.
To achieve their Gold award, the recipients began their journey four years ago in Year 10. Starting with Bronze then progressing to Silver then onto Gold, these young people have given more than 100 hours of service, learned new skills over a period of at least 24 months and participated in regular physical activities.
They completed six expeditions ranging from 2 – 5 days tramping in the Waitakere and Kaimai Ranges, Great Barrier Island and The Heaphy Track in Nelson.
Each of them has also undertaken a residential project in which they interact with young people other than their peers, in a camp or leadership role.
When reflecting on the activities Richard found that during the tramps, participants could truly appreciate the natural environment that is in our own backyard. He also found that when the group got away from societal pressures, this allowed his peers to let their guards down and really get to know each other.
For Andrew, the award encouraged activity, learning new skills and doing something tangible to help the community. He found the programme to be full of fun and a challenge to each and every individual at their own level. He felt the sense of achievement that comes with completing each stage of the award, made it all worthwhile.
Hannah felt that learning to fly was an amazing skill that she might otherwise not have had the chance to do. Because of the challenges presented to her, she now sees herself as a better leader and is more confident in her day-to-day life and work.
In New Zealand, The Duke of Edinburgh Award is known as the Young New Zealanders' Challenge. It is a prestigious and well-recognised award that is highly regarded by employers as it shows determination, courage, commitment and perseverance. These are desirable traits for every young person and Kristin School are proud that Andrew, Hannah and Richard have achieved to such a high level.
